Starting in 1920 Brazilian brothers Carlos, Oswaldo, Gastão Jr., George, and Hélio Gracie further developed this method of fighting into what is today known as Brazilian Ju-Jitsu or BJJ.

At TEMPLE BJJ we have a fully equipped custom made strength and conditioning facility. Free weights include dumbbells, barbells, bench-press machines and much more. All for the common goal of improved strength, power, speed and endurance.

All you need for your first class is comfortable clothing. A fitted t-shirt or rash guard is ideal, pocketless shorts are preferable. For women tights and a top is fine. However, if you have a Jiu-Jitsu Kimono or ‘Gi’ feel free to wear that.

A water bottle and a small towel for drying off after the class is also a good idea.

Absolutely not! We have tons of Gi’s ready and available for you to rent and wear during your first week or so. After you fall in love with jiu-jitsu though, we have phenomenal Gi's available for purchase

One of the primary focus of Jiu-Jitsu is self-defense. We will teach you the fundamentals of self-defense, as well as the modern evolution of the martial art and a range of techniques. You’ll also learn how to control resisting opponents on the ground and how to apply submissions effectively.

Training jiu-jitsu is an interactive, engaging, and fun activity where your little one (or big one! We have kids ranging from age 4 to age 15) will improve their balance, reflexes, flexibility, and coordination. In addition to the physical benefits, practicing Jiu-Jitsu and its embodiment of traditional martial arts principles will gently endow upon them discipline, resiliency, patience, work ethic, and, most importantly, will boost their self-esteem. YES! Jiu-Jitsu is an excellent choice for women, especially for how it contributes to one’s self-defensive ability, sense of community and belonging and of course, mental and physical fitness. When an “opponent’s” physical size exceeds our own, jiu-jitsu trains us to utilize leverage and specific techniques that work to fill that gap.

Sign up fees are a completely made-up way some academies try to get “leverage” over their clients. There are no signup fees at Temple. We have several options to purchase including monthly, VIP monthly. 10 packs, drop ins, etc. Please go to the membership tab for more information.

We frequently have visitors drop in for training from all over the world. With affiliations all over the world and being located on a tropical vacation island many of our customers are dropping in to train with us for weeks/ months.

Most definitely! In addition to being immensely fun, training will increase your muscle tone, bodily coordination, cardiovascular capacity, muscular endurance, balance, and will (inevitably) reduce overall body fat. All that being said, please make sure you hydrate and fuel yourself properly before and after training.

Of course. At temple we have both Gi and No-Gi classes for beginners, competitors and MMA fighters.

This is really dependent on your lifestyle and your goals. You can train as little or as often as you like but to get the most benefit, we recommend a minimum of two-three times a week for beginners. We have membership options to suit everyone’s needs.

A black belt can take 10 years or more of hard work and consistent training to achieve.

Twice a day, our entire mat space is vacuumed, then mopped down and sterilized with an anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and skin-safe cleaning solution. Our locker rooms, bathrooms, weight-lifting area, and common areas, too, are cleaned and tidied daily.

Additionally, as general rules for our members, we require that shoes are always worn when off the mat, a fresh Gi must be worn for each class (if taking multiple in a row), and dirty Gi’s cannot be worn in the weights area if someone chooses to lift after class. We follow strict Covid-19 protocols as applied.
